Muraqaba (Meditation)
and Zikr (Circle of Unity) Workshop

The (Muraqaba) or contemplative, meditation session, will be approximately 30 min. The session will start with a short introduction where people will receive their Esma’s (mantras). Sessions are guided at the beginning and will last as long as the participants choose and feel they are in need of this and may continue for as long as the group chooses. After some mastery and comfort with this method, people may choose to have silent sessions.

The Zikr (circle of unity) starts with an explanation as to its function, and purpose. Esma’s (Chants) will be explained as well as their purpose and meaning. The movements that accompany the various Esma’s are practiced at this time.

At the start of Zikr, people are in a sitting position and lasts approximately 30min. Following the sitting piece, participants will be asked to stand, this also lasts about ½ to one hour depending on the participants and the dedication with which people apply themselves.

After the Zikr is completed, there will be tea, fruit, and a question period and time to chat. The total duration is about 2 ½  to 3 hours. The Zikr session may run up to 2 hours if intensity allows, this can vary from session to session and people should make provisions for this eventuality.

People will be lent counting beads for the Murakba or some other counting method. Participants can choose to sit in a crossed legged position or make use of the meditation benches, that we will provide or one can bring a cushions.

This is a six week workshop when it is used on an outreach basis, or the in town centre but will become a daily practice on the rural property.

These sessions can bring out extreme emotions for some.
This is normal and part of the exercise.
